I Still Believe in the Bible

Call Me Crazy, but I Still Believe in the Bible

By Rev. Gary Lewis

Senior Pastor

We are increasingly living in an anti-Bible culture. Secularists have successfully persuaded generations of Americans to believe that secularism and humanism are about facts, science and real knowledge. Faith, critics argue, is more about mere feelings, superstitions, and believing in something in spite of all evidence to the contrary.

As theologian Dallas Willard notes, the stories in the Bible know nothing about blind faith or leaps of faith. “Such leaps are pure fantasy imposed upon those stories and upon the religious life by the prejudices and tortured turns of modern thought. The result has been to undermine the foundations of faith in knowledge and to leave the teachings of Jesus and his people (along with those of other religions) hanging in the air, with no right or responsibility to direct human life.”

The Bible is not about blind faith. It is about choosing to see God because you know he is there. Faith is not believing in something without good reason to do so. It is acting on what you have seen and engaging your will based on what you know to be true.

I have often said this in my sermons: It is OK to ask questions about the Bible and faith and to seek answers to those questions. But there comes a time when Christ-followers need to doubt their doubts and dig into what they believe. In other words, once you have found good reasons to believe, trust your beliefs. That is the step to spiritual growth.

I have been called too old-fashioned. I have been called out for being too old and out of touch. However, I know what God has done in my life and in the lives of so many people I have had the pleasure to know. God is real and God reigns. Some have even said I am crazy.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that Jesus loves me. This I know because the Bible tells me so.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that The B-I-B-L-E, Yes, that’s the book for me; I stand alone on the Word of God, The B-I-B-L-E.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that What Can Wash Away My Sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that Jesus is the Sweetest Name I Know.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that I’ve Got a Home in Glory Land That Outshines the Sun.

Call me crazy, but I still believe that Surely, the Presence of the Lord is in This Place
